Chapter Fourteen

In the end, Greer stormed back into the room very late in the evening, obviously in a mood. Hansen was due to come by in a few minutes and intended to go with us to look for Mr. French, while Jasper needed to make some work calls. Plus, I was expecting that he and Deacon would be hanging out with some of the other groomsmen that night.

“You look frazzled,” said Charlie, smoothing her blond hair into a ponytail as if the gesture might calm Greer down.

Greer dumped her stuff onto a chair and collapsed into the nearest one.

“Wow. My mother. I can’t tell you. Even Mrs. Grate might have been a little surprised today,” said Greer, looking desperate.

It hadn’t struck me until now that Greer still called her mother-in-law Mrs. Grate instead of by her first name. If you’d met her, on the other hand, that might not surprise you in the slightest.

“She drove us straight to the study. We don’t even have that in our plans for the wedding,” Greer said.

The Wedding Plans were a thing to behold. Mrs. Dice had basically written a book-length directive about how this wedding was going to go. She’d had the pages laminated and put into special, expensive-looking binders. She’d distributed one to the Grates, one to Greer, and one to the estate, keeping two for herself. Charlie had familiarized herself with the pages inside Greer’s copy of the binder, concentrating especially hard on timing and the guest list.

“Are you two okay?” Greer asked. She had already heard that we were, but her face was suddenly filled with concern.

“We’re fine. We’re totally fine. You don’t need to worry about us,” Charlie assured her. “We were actually just going out to see if we can find Mr. French’s ghost again if you want to come.”

Greer sighed, started to leverage herself out of the chair, and then fell back. “No, I’ll take it easy for a while, but I should be around if my mom starts looking for me.”

“Surely your mom’s done for the night,” I said.

“She’s never done. That’s what I’m learning,” said Greer with a deep sigh. “I thought today was supposed to be a relaxing day with family. Turned out, she had a PowerPoint presentation and the Wedding Book with her. Even Dad seems to think she’s lost it. Derek didn’t even go.”

“I know. I saw him at lunch. He was busy hiding from Sage Harbour,” I said.

Greer’s face split into a grin for the first time in a long time. “Oh, yes. The great love that got away. Kind of. They weren’t together very long. He was woefully immature about it, but I don’t think he ever got over her, either,” she said.

“Nice bit of work inviting her to the wedding,” said Charlie.

Greer scoffed. “I could have invited five hundred more people and Mom probably would have been happier. She really is downright crazy,” said Greer. “You all have fun and be careful out there.”

A singsong voice called out to us as we headed out of the suite.
